A little look back

31st December 2012
It’s the time of the year again to have a look back on the past 12 months. Usually I do this with my top 10 images of the year. This year however… well let’s just say 2012 has been a bit of a blur.
It started in early January when I got a call from the Tree Council of Ireland. They were planning a book on remarkable trees of Ireland and asked if I would be interested in contributing the images. It was obviously a no-brainer, an assignment like this doesn’t come along often in Ireland, and soon I was following in the footsteps of master tree photographer Thomas Pakenham. I even had to photograph the master’s own tree at Tullynally Castle and I am still hoping I did it justice.
The next surprise call came from the guys at dpreview (one of the biggest photo websites on the planet), asking if I would be interested in writing for them. Again a no-brainer. Although getting published on dpreview comes with a certain amount of unsolicited abuse and insult from some individuals it’s fun and also results in some interesting discussions.
As the saying goes ‘when it rains, it pours’ and suddenly I found myself with various assignments and commitments and it all became a blur. A good blur though, it’s good to be busy!
The final highlight of the year was the launch of my new book Ireland’s Coast. The feedback so far has been phenomenal and humbling. One lady told me “It’s so beautiful I had to cry” so it seems I have done a reasonable good job. Although it wasn’t my intention to bring people to tears!
On the technical side I somehow revamped my whole photographic outfit. First there was the EOS 5D MK3, probably the best camera Canon has made in decades. Unfortunately this is the best I can say about Canon. But that’s another story…
The latest addition to my bag was the Sony RX100, a pocket camera with 20MP… in comparison my full frame DSLR has 22MP. It’s a bit scary. Will put this little wonder to the test in the coming weeks.

So that was 2012… what will 2013 bring? There are some interesting projects and events on the horizon. The Ireland’s Coast exhibition will hit the road in May, I will do workshops for the Burren College of Art and I will go back to my photographic beginnings… more on all of that in the New Year. See you then!
